Amalgam or silver fillings what the issues with removing these?
The main issue with removing amalgam restorations is the process of removing dental amalgam restorations temporarily releases mercury vapour.
Besides the aspect of health protection during the removal of insufficient amalgam fillings, special emphasis has been placed above all on keeping the treatment time as short as possible.
We have a special bur (drill) for this very purpose.
Its properties are:
- Distinctive tip transversing blade for optimal axial drilling ability, low resistance to penetration and a large chip space
- Toothing with a pyramid-shaped cutting tip
- Clearly defined chip spaces for high efficient cutting of amalgam and proper removal of the debris
What are the issues with amalgam restorations?
The restrictions with amalgam restorations:
The EU Regulation states that, from 1 July 2018, dental amalgam should not be used in the treatment of children under 15 years of age and in pregnant or breastfeeding women, except when deemed strictly necessary by the dental practitioner based on the specific medical needs of the patient.
At Barkhill Dental Clinic we are an amalgam free clinic and do not use amalgam at all, if we remove amalgam restorations we use a rubber sheet to protect the airway and surrounding tissues from the mercury vapor
